Porkbun’s 4 Million Domains Put Ownership Verification in the Registrar Spotlight

Porkbun has crossed 4 million domains under management, a marker that matters beyond one registrar’s growth curve because it comes with adoption of DomainAttest, a protocol meant to let marketplaces verify domain ownership directly with registrars.

Domain Name Wire reported on August 5 that Porkbun now serves about 750,000 active domain customers and manages more than 1.5 million .com domains. The same report says the registrar has adopted DomainAttest, which is designed to give domain marketplaces a cleaner way to confirm that a seller controls the name being listed.

For site operators, the practical angle is trust in the domain transaction chain. Domain sales and transfers still depend heavily on account control, registrar workflows, marketplace escrow processes, and DNS or nameserver changes that can create room for fraud, delays, or operational mistakes. Registrar-level ownership attestation does not remove the need for due diligence, but it points toward less brittle verification than screenshots, TXT-record workarounds, or manual account checks.

The scale number is also a useful signal for the retail domain market. Porkbun has grown largely on transparent pricing and developer-friendly domain management rather than a heavy upsell model. That puts pressure on larger registrars and hosting bundles, especially as customers compare renewal pricing, DNS controls, email add-ons, WHOIS privacy, API access, and aftermarket workflows.

Hosting providers should watch whether DomainAttest-style checks become a normal part of domain marketplaces and control panels. If adoption spreads, domain listings could become easier to validate, fraudulent listings harder to sustain, and customer support teams less dependent on ad hoc proof-of-ownership steps. The broader lesson is familiar: the domain name is still the root dependency for hosted sites, email, TLS, CDN configuration, and brand continuity.
