Google Cloud Storage customers in the us-central1 region saw elevated write latency and upload errors for more than half a day on Oct. 8, according to a preliminary incident report from Google Cloud.

The incident is directly relevant for site operators and hosting teams that use object storage for media uploads, backups, static assets, deployment artifacts, logs, or user-generated content. Google said the problem affected upload and write operations in us-central1, with a smaller subset of read operations also seeing increased latency and errors during the event.

In its preliminary report, Google listed the incident start as 04:00 Pacific time and the end as 16:30 Pacific time on Oct. 8, a duration of 12 hours and 30 minutes. Earlier status updates during the incident said there was no workaround available while engineers mitigated the problem.

Localized capacity shortfall hit storage backends

Google’s preliminary root cause points to a localized capacity shortfall on specific backend storage nodes in the affected region. The company said a traffic sorting optimization intended to address capacity constraints led to severe resource exhaustion on some backend nodes, causing object-ingestion services to time out.

Those timeouts surfaced as failed or slow upload and write requests for customers routed to the affected nodes. Google also said a separate issue with an underlying database service contributed to additional metadata-operation latency during the incident.

Why hosting teams should care

For web hosts, agencies, SaaS operators, and WordPress teams, the incident is a reminder that “regional” object-storage dependency can still become a user-visible outage when writes are in the critical path. Upload-heavy sites, backup pipelines, image-processing workflows, and build systems that assume immediate object writes may need queueing, retry budgets, region-aware failover, or degraded-mode behavior.

Google said it is working on corrective actions and plans to publish a final incident report after the investigation is complete.
