Identity Digital Wins .us Registry Contract From GoDaddy

Identity Digital has won the U.S. government contract to run the .us country-code domain, setting up a registry transition away from GoDaddy for roughly two million names, according to Domain Name Wire.

The change matters for registrars, hosting providers, domain resellers, and site operators that package .us names with web hosting or local-business services. Domain Name Wire reported that Identity Digital will take over from GoDaddy Registry, which inherited the contract through Neustar’s registry business, and that the contract includes a transition period of up to nine months.

For GoDaddy, the loss is not likely to move headline revenue by itself, but it removes a high-margin registry stream tied to a national TLD. Domain Name Wire estimated the zone at about two million domains and noted that wholesale pricing details are still expected from NTIA.

Identity Digital already operates a large registry platform across hundreds of TLDs and provides back-end services for ccTLDs and infrastructure-adjacent extensions, including .ai, .au, .io, and many generic domains. That scale should make the technical handoff manageable, but registrars will still need to watch for implementation notices, EPP changes, maintenance windows, policy updates, and pricing announcements.

What hosting and domain providers should watch

  • Registrar migration notices: Any required operational changes for provisioning, renewals, transfers, and DNS-related registry workflows.
  • Wholesale price changes: NTIA has not yet announced future pricing, making reseller margin and retail bundle pricing a key open question.
  • Policy updates: .us has local-presence and eligibility rules that affect customer onboarding and compliance checks.
  • Transition timing: A multi-month handoff means providers should track maintenance advisories before making customer-facing commitments.

The near-term takeaway: this is a registry-operator change rather than an immediate end-user outage story. Still, because .us is the United States’ official country-code TLD and is commonly sold through hosting and domain storefronts, providers should monitor NTIA and registrar-channel communications before the transition reaches production systems.
